Before You Go…
The multitude of microcosms sailed by during an LA morning commute is astounding. The kosher shops along Pico, carnicerias at the edge of Boyle Heights or boba cafes dispersed along Wilshire all have a special spot in our lives. Few things in our beautiful city hold true in our hearts like our neighborhood coffee joint in the morning and sushi spot at night. Lucky for us we found a Japanese microcosm combining the best of both worlds.
So plan on heading out on a Thursday to dive into a sake happy hour, local sushi legends, and a hidden comedy show at a Japanese style coffee house.
Stop #1 — 5:30 PM
Sip Happiness
at a Japanese happy hour
What to Know
Happy hour runs Monday – Thursday: 5pm-6:33pm, Friday – Sunday: 4-5:33pm, All Days: 10pm-Close. The menu is deep with $4 beers, $5 wines, and $6-7 cocktails. Also, $3-13 Asian tapas.
The little spot is dimly lit but perfect to start the evening. Highly suggest the high table near the windows.
What to order: Japanese 1+1 (sake shot + beer), baked hand crab roll, or scallop skewers.
Future reference: In the back of the building is a lounge called The Alley. If you’re in party mode it could be a cool spot to circle back and end the night at.
The walk to stop #2 is about 10 minutes. It’s a nice stretch but if this gives you anxiety a Bird is always around the corner here.
Stop #2 — 6:45 PM
Eat Happiness
at a local Japanese staple
What to Know
Sakura Sushi has been serving the community for almost 50 years. The current owner was originally a waitress here who saved her money and bought the business 25 years ago!
Unfortunately they only take reservations if you have 6 or more people in your party. There is a possibility you may have a short wait.
What to order: sushi & sashimi chef’s choice ($30, good for two people), baked miso cod, and seared ono.
Stop #3 — 7:55 PM
Hear Happiness
at a Japanese style coffee house
What to Know
Any day before 5 pm Sachi.LA is a gathering place for local coffee and matcha lovers. It’s the passion project of two sisters, Chiyo and Sachi.
For this date: once a month on a Thursday the incredibly hilarious Jerry & Friends show takes place. It’s the brain child of Jerry Kassebaum, an Indiana native, stand up comedian, and cranberry juice lover.
If you’re feeling a bit sleepy no worries. The coffee bar is open before and during these shows.
The cost of admission is only $5 but make sure you bring cash.
