Before the Date…
This taste of the islands can not only change your state of mind but also the state of your living situation. At this point you’ve just been invited to your new Hawaiian families Sunday brunch. An ohana who has been gathering for years to smother pancakes with cocnut syrup and sing slow tunes. It’s a perfect way to end the weekend and prepare for the work week ahead. Combine that with finding a little green slice of the jungle for your house and you have a permanent reminder to take it slow.
So round up your kine cause you’re about to be on Hawaiian time.
St0p #1: by 11am
HAWAIIAN BRUNCH
with your new ohana
What to Know
Opened in 1995 this local hang has been kept alive by the locals who dine here. Have a walk around to look at the memorabilia to get a feel of the old school vibe.
Absolutely arrive here by 11am. Securing a booth next to the band is crucial and the place will be packed by 11:30am. If you can sit at the booth directly to the right of the band.
The band is in fact on hawaiian time so plan on taking your time while they all make it in and set up.
What to order: Banana pancakes w/ coconut syrup, french toast and the homemade Portuguese sausage.
St0p #2: post eats & tunes
NURSERY FINDS
from a multigenerational japanese family
What to Know
For years Gardena has the most Japanese individuals per capita in the US. The Akiyamas have been running this nursery since 1975 and are unbelievably knowledgable. Discuss your morning and plants with them if you can.
You’ll park on the rocky lot. Straight ahead are the large plants/trees. Start there and find your way to the “office.” The indoor plants are in the back of the office.
Most likely you’ll be in need of some soil, don’t forget. Ask them and they’ll hook you up with a small portion so you don’t have to buy a massive bag.
St0p #3: until you’ve found the perfect plant
PICK OUT A POT
for your new plant
What to Know
The amount of pottery here will make your head spin. Start by cruising the outside and make your way to the small stuff.
This is also a family owned operation. It may seem like your inquiery doesn’t matter but don’t worry about asking them for help.
Looking for something that won’t break the bank? The pots to the left of the check out desk are $5.
